ACTING WHITE HOUSE DRUG POLICY DIRECTOR TO ATTEND U.S.-MEXICO BI-NATIONAL DRUG DEMAND REDUCTION CONFERENCE IN MEXICO CITY
(Washington, D.C.)Edward Jurith, Acting Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), will attend the U.S.-Mexico Bi-National Drug Demand Reduction Conference in Mexico City, November 1416. Acting Director Jurith will join top-level officials from the U.S. and Mexico to develop cooperative initiatives for confronting common drug threats. Among those who will attend are Dr. Joseph Autry, Acting Administrator for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Ruth Sanchez-Way, Director of the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, and Dr. Wesley Clark, Director of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment.
"As friends and neighbors, the United States and Mexico have experienced first-hand the social and economic devastation caused by drug abuse. This conference will advance cooperation in reducing substance abuse in the U.S. and Mexico by bringing together key policy makers, public health experts, and other demand reduction practitioners to share their expertise and experiences. Together, we will identify areas for future collaboration and progress in research, prevention, education, and treatment," said Acting Director Jurith.
"Today drug addiction is a truly global phenomenon. It is expanding throughout geographic regions and social classes. It threatens societies with disease, crime, violence, and corruption. This conference will facilitate further sharing of information and understanding between the U.S. and Mexico, and will serve as a model of cooperation that is necessary throughout the world. The strides being taken to fight drug abuse in the United States and Mexico are constructive and progressive," said Jurith.
